~ SPIRITUAL ABUSE ~

Spiritual abuse can be very subtle, especially in the beginning. Certain individuals are praised and looked up to, which you are encouraged to emulate.
Other individuals are pointed out as being inferior.
Performance is key.

Abusive leaders do not like to be questioned and have a way of making their members look down on others, especially outsiders, but even inside the group.

Control is accomplished through making the individual want to fit in, want to be praised, want to be looked up to. This happens without the individual even realizing it- through comparisons, fear of not fitting in, hearing others be insulted or shamed, by threats, criticism, and insults. If they were only 'better'...

Those who are encouraged to leave by others, or who develop a desire to leave,
will fear losing relationships do to being shunned.

In Galatians, Paul wonders how quickly his brothers were able to be decieved into living by the law and turning from the true grace of God.

Our realtionship with God is through Christ. He satisfied the requirements of God for us, if we believe - or trust - in Him.

Nothing we can DO can make us right with God,
other than believe, or trust, in Jesus.

Our relationship with Him is not based on our performance!

What we do should be motivated by His great love for us, by our understanding of how much Jesus paid for our salvation, and our desire to honor Him.

God is not honored if we do something to please another person or out of fear of another person.
