~ CHILD ABUSE ~

EXAMPLES OF EMOTIONAL ABUSE
Rejecting the child by refusing to look at them or talk to them
Neglecting the child by depriving them of touch or care
Depriving the child of resources, food, water, medication
Isolating the child from friends or family
Confining the child to a room alone for prolonged times
Confining the child to a closet or other small area
Scaring the child by keeping them in the dark
Shaming or ridiculing the child
Threatening the child
Not allowing the child to attend school, church, or work
Punching the wall, throwing something with them in the room
Scaring them by treating their pet or toy roughly
Blaming the child for your bad mood, for everything that goes wrong, for your underemployment, or addictions...

EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL ABUSE
Pushing, slapping, hitting the child
Any type of physical restriction such as tying them up

Your children should NOT fear you or your spouse. They should not feel wary or afraid of your next angry outburst. If this describes your relationship, please find help. Try to find someone you trust who you can confide in and seek advice from. Repeated abuse leaves deep scars!

Even the best parent may get irritated or aggitated on an occassional basis and may say something they wish they hadn't or fail to treat the child the best way. If you do or say something you regret, apologize!

If you feel out of control, walk away into another room for a few minutes and take deep breaths. Pray.
Do not be too proud to ask for help!

Every now and then a horrible story hits the news about a mother who loses control and kills her children. Julie Schenecker killed her two teen children recently. This family went to our former church for a short time. The pastor of that church got to know them a little and thought of them as a very nice, stable, and normal Christian family.

An FBI Special Agent, Brad Garrett, spoke on ABC News and described the thinking behind a mother that kills her children. He said the thinking of the mother is that “I produced the children, I gave birth to the children, and those children are mine, I have a right to control their destiny”...

I hear this from Christian moms all the time. I agree it's dangerous thinking. Our children belong to our Lord. They are given to us on loan. We are to disciple (discipline) our children as Jesus discipled His followers. Note how many times the Bible tells us to be kind, gentle, tender hearted, loving...

Be careful. Our adversary is always hard at work.
